The Elephant?
Yes, I was there that night.
I saw an article in IT (International Times) all about them. There was a picture – otherwise I wouldn’t have known it was an elephant!
It was like a bigger version of a two man panto horse – without the costume!
Some of them stooped to form the body – and the front and back legs. A girl, sitting on the shoulders of the guys in front, dangled her legs – representing the trunk I suppose.
They all swayed along to the music. Sort of eastern music. Tom toms and a reedy sort of flute sound.
I think some people must have been hoping they’d do one of their naked shows – but we got the elephant!
A few days earlier it was quieter. Then they’d harassed us from the centre of the Roundhouse.
‘No money’, ‘No property’, . . . .
Shouting and screaming at us. Ended up rolling around the floor!
Weird!
They were from New York – and known for their ‘Happenings’. The sort of stuff Yoko Ono was into I suppose.
They were in London because they:
– Were on a European Tour.
– Had been ejected as undesirables from the US.
– Were dodging the US taxman.
Could be one or all of these as far as I can see.
Take your pick!
